Charles III was born at Buckingham Palace on November 14, 1948. He was the first of four children in the family and so at the age of 4 he became the first heir to the throne when his mother, Elizabeth II, was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom.

Contrary to royal custom, his education took place at a private school and not strictly at the palace. He studied in England and Scotland and in 1967 entered Trinity College, Cambridge, from where he graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Charles thus became the first heir to the crown to obtain a university degree. In parallel, he studied Welsh at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, in preparation for his coronation as Prince of Wales by the Queen in 1969.

Following his studies, he attended the Royal Air Force College and the Royal Naval College, and from 1971 to 1976 he served in the Royal Navy.

In 1976 he founded The Prince’s Trust, a charity in the United Kingdom to help vulnerable young people get their lives back on track. To this day, he remains the founder and president of 16 more charitable organizations. In the course of his life he expressed a strong interest in modern architecture, his views on which he developed in his book: A Vision of Britain (1989).

The wedding with Princess Diana

On 29 July 1981, Charles married Lady Diana Frances Spencer, daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer. The royal wedding took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral and was a global media event. It was broadcast live on television and watched by hundreds of millions of people; after the ceremony, Diana took the title of Princess of Wales.

On June 21, 1982, the couple’s first child, Prince William of Wales and then second in line to the throne, was born. Their second child, Prince Henry Charles Albert David (known as Harry), was born on 15 September 1984.

Charles’ marriage to Diana gradually became increasingly strained amid intense tabloid press scrutiny and rumors of infidelity. On 9 December 1992, it was announced that Charles and Diana had decided to separate, with the divorce taking effect on 28 August 1996. However, Diana continued to live at Kensington Palace to carry out her public duties and to share with Charles the responsibility of raising their sons.

Just one year later, on August 30, 1997, Lady Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris. Popular sentiment about her acted as a threat to the traditional form of monarchy that Charles represented, so he had to go to great lengths to modernize his public image as heir to the crown. In 2003, Diana’s butler published a note purported to be hers, written in 1995, in which she claimed her ex-husband was planning an “accident” in her car so he could remarry. King Charles denied the accusations.

On April 9, 2005, he married Camilla Parker Bowles, the woman he had an extramarital affair with while he was still married to Diana. Their wedding took place in a civil ceremony, a first for the royal family, with Charles’ parents absent, likely due to Queen Elizabeth’s position as Supreme Ruler of the Church of England. Camilla after the wedding took the title of Duchess of Cornwall. Now, with the royal coronation of Charles, the duchess acquires a new title, that of the Royal Consort, i.e. the wife of a sitting king.

In the following decade, public interest turned to the prince’s sons, who “won” the limelight with their royal weddings. But Charles’ public image soon faced additional difficulties as his son Harry, along with his wife, decided to step down from their royal duties and ceased to be considered members of the royal family.

In 2021, a scandal was revealed that testified to the relations of Prince Andrew (second son of Queen Elizabeth and brother of Charles) with a merchant of white flesh. After this, Andrew renounced his military titles and renounced all his royal patronages. This means that he will no longer use the title of ‘Royal Highness’ and his other roles will be assigned to other members of the royal family.

The coronation ceremony

The coronation ceremony of King Charles will take place in Westminster Abbey, a London church which has been the place of coronation of the kings of the United Kingdom for the last 900 years. Charles will be the 40th king to be crowned there. The crown that will be placed on the king’s head dates from 1661 and is made of solid gold.
