Randolfe asks for new CPI to determine vaccination of children

by

Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) filed this Tuesday (11) a request for the installation of a new CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate actions and omissions in the face of the new coronavirus pandemic.

This new CPI would investigate the facts that occurred after November last year, focusing on the controversies and omissions in the vaccination of children and adolescents, the lack of vaccines for the application of booster doses, the attacks by President Jair Bolsonaro on the technicians of the Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) and the blackout of data regarding the pandemic from the Ministry of Health.

The application requires the signatures of at least 27 of the 81 senators.

Randolfe is also the author of the Covid CPI request, which acted between April and October last year. The senator for Amapá was also the vice president of the commission.

The request for the first CPI gathered the necessary signatures on February 4, the day after the inauguration of the new president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

Pacheco, however, withheld the installation of the CPI alleging that it was not the time to investigate the facts and that a parliamentary commission of inquiry required an in-person activity – at the time the Senate operated only remotely.

Government leaders made little effort in an action to withdraw signatures, assessing that the commission had little chance of succeeding. However, a decision by the Federal Supreme Court determined its installation at the end of April.

The commission then attracted great attention and became one of the main headaches for the Bolsonaro government, investigating and pointing out omissions in the purchase of vaccines, cases of corruption and the defense of denialist policies.

The final report called for the indictment of Bolsonaro and 77 more people, including the chief executive’s sons, ministers of state and lawmakers. The CPI leadership currently denounces that cases involving special jurisdiction are progressing very slowly at the Attorney General’s Office.

In the application for the new CPI, Randolfe argues that the country is once again hit by the new coronavirus pandemic, more specifically by the ômicron variant. Despite this, the Ministry of Health is currently experiencing a data blackout, which prevents a more detailed radiography of the pandemic in Brazil.

“Brazil is still experiencing a blackout of official data on Covid-19, which, added to the low testing for the disease in the country, leads to a situation in which exact numbers are not known about the evolution of cases, hospitalizations, deaths and vaccination, making it impossible for the scientific community to obtain an accurate picture of the pandemic and making it impossible for effective public policies to be implemented”, states the request.

The document also states that the Ministry of Health ignores Anvisa’s recommendation regarding the vaccination of children between 5 and 11 years old, even though there is an immunizer already approved for application in this age group.

The government, in turn, argues, adopted delaying measures, such as holding a public consultation to verify the opinion of the population.

“It is estimated that childhood vaccination will only start in the second half of January, that is, a window of opportunity of almost a month was lost”, says the request, which also questions the amount of vaccines available, which would be insufficient for the application of booster doses.

The document also recalls the advances of the previous CPI, justifying that they forced the government to take measures to face the pandemic.

“In addition to determining the responsibilities for the mismanagement of the pandemic, the 2021 CPI was essential to pressure the Brazilian government to buy and advance the supply of vaccines to the population. states the request.

“Countless evidence revealed has proven omissions and deliberate actions around a false herd immunity, with the promotion of ineffective treatments and boycotts of non-pharmacological measures such as the use of masks, social distancing and hand sanitizer. This is all supported by an extensive network. of fake news fueled by public authorities”, he adds.

The document also adds that the end of the CPI was enough for the president to resume a denialist policy of confrontation. He cites, for example, the attacks against Anvisa agents and the suggestion that there would be interests behind the defense of the vaccination of children.

“Every day they are not vaccinated and immunized, children are contaminated by Covid-19, and may later develop sequelae or die. In addition, vaccination of children is important so that the circulation and development of the new coronavirus are , finally, controlled and reduced”, states the text.

“The set of attacks and vaccination boycotts, by President Bolsonaro and the denialist fake news network, threatens efforts to combat covid-19, costing more lives and deepening the economic cost of the pandemic”, he adds.
