Papaevangelou: 2.5% of the population has active cases – New data for Omicron

by

The viral load is still extremely high, with active cases accounting for 2.5% of the population, said Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and member of the Committee of Experts Vana Papaevangelou.

There are two main characteristics of this particular pandemic wave:

1. Active cases are starting to be more common at older ages. The outbreak of Omicron had initially hit the young, but today there is a shift towards the older. As Ms. Papaevangelou said, this means a more serious illness.

2. Dispersion is now observed outside large cities. There is a significant increase in cases on the islands and in mainland Greece.

However, imports appear to be stabilizing and will remain so for the next 15 days. The number of intubations for the next 2 weeks will be constant.

Also, there is no increase in hospitalized children.

Ms. Papaevangelou pointed out that 6 out of 10 patients are unvaccinated, while of the patients who need mechanical respiratory support, more than 85% are unvaccinated.

Omicron disease

According to new data from a study conducted in California, the initial predictions for milder symptoms of the disease from the Omicron mutation were confirmed.

Also, a lower probability of serious illness, hospitalization and death was confirmed.

Those who became ill were mostly young, which is why there is skepticism about the severity of the disease in older people.

Finally, the professor stated that the Delta mutation is not gone, it is even spreading and it is even half of the cases in the hospitals, as 1 in 2 who are admitted have Delta disease.
