The first child vaccinated against Covid-19 in Brazil will be an 8-year-old indigenous boy, Davi Seremramiwe Xavante, who lives in the state of São Paulo, where he is being treated for a genetic disease, and will be immunized this Friday (14), at Hospital das Clínicas, in a ceremony scheduled for 12:00.

Born to a Xavante tribe in the state of Mato Grosso, Davi moved to Piracicaba (SP) a year ago to be treated at the Instituto da Criança at Hospital das Clínicas. Because of the problem, he has difficulty walking and now wears an orthosis.

The vaccination act, which will be accompanied by Governor João Doria (PSDB-SP), marks the beginning of childhood immunization for children aged 5 to 11 years, after weeks of resistance from the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, which opposed Anvisa ( National Health Surveillance Agency) in the matter.

In this first stage of the campaign, the recommendation of the São Paulo State Immunization Plan is that municipalities give priority to children aged 5 to 11 years with comorbidities, disabilities, indigenous people and quilombolas. Hence the choice of David to be the first to receive the vaccine.

The indigenous boy, who was immunized with Pfizer’s pediatric vaccine, is the son of the Xavante chief Jurandir Siridiwe. For nine months, he traveled monthly with the boy to the capital of São Paulo so that he could undergo treatment.

With the move to São Paulo, Davi was taken to the house of a tutor in Piracicaba who accompanies him in his routine consultations at the HC, with doctors in the areas of rehabilitation and neurology.

The person responsible for his custody is researcher Fernanda Viegas Reichardt, who has a degree in law and a doctorate in applied ecology and, in recent months, has analyzed the impacts of Covid on Brazilian indigenous peoples, drawing attention to their vulnerability to the disease.

The boy’s locomotion problem is studied by specialists from the Instituto da Criança, who seek to identify the reasons for the loss of part of the movement of the legs. Professionals also do a complete genetic study with him, as there are other children in the tribe with similar symptoms.

Davi will receive the vaccine almost a year after the first person vaccinated in Brazil against Covid-19, nurse Mônica Calazans. Her immunization, revealed firsthand by the column on January 17, 2021, symbolized hope for better days amid the face of the pandemic.

Childhood immunization in the state is starting hours after the arrival of doses of the Pfizer vaccine released for use in children in Brazil.

The State Department of Health set up a logistical operation for the distribution of 234,000 doses sent by the Ministry of Health. .

The expectation of the Government of São Paulo is to immunize 4.3 million children in the period of three weeks.
