SP City Hall starts vaccinating children aged 5 to 11 without comorbidities this Saturday

by

Vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years without comorbidities will begin this Saturday (22) in the city of São Paulo. On the first day, 205 UBSs (basic health units) and AMAs (outpatient medical assistance) will be made available for the exclusive vaccination of children.

The calendar was published this Thursday (20), shortly after Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) approved the use of Coronavac in the public from 6 to 17 years old. Before that, only the Pfizer immunizer was allowed for this age group — the product from the North American laboratory is authorized from the age of 5.

The agenda of the capital of São Paulo, therefore, postpones the immunization of the little ones by two days. That’s because Governor João Doria (PSDB) announced the start of vaccination in children without comorbidities for this Thursday at a school located in Perdizes, west of São Paulo, where one hundred students received the first dose of the immunizer.

As for the priority groups —children with comorbidities or disabilities, and indigenous people and quilombolas—, vaccination against Covid-19 in the 5-11 age group began on January 14. The first immunized was Davi Seremramiwe Xavante, an 8-year-old indigenous boy who lives in the state of São Paulo, where he is being treated for a genetic disease.

Despite the schedule presented by Doria this Thursday, Edson Aparecido, Health Secretary of the capital, explains that the city will only distribute the immunizing agent this Friday (21) to start vaccination for small children on Saturday.

Another difference is that the government’s calendar provides that children aged between 9 and 11 will be vaccinated at this first moment and, as of January 31, children aged between 5 and 8 years. The city hall of São Paulo, however, already provides for the immunization of 5 to 11 at once.

Anvisa allowed Coronavac to be applied to young people aged 6 to 17 years, as long as they are not immunocompromised. Therefore, five-year-olds from São Paulo and immunocompromised individuals in this age group will only receive pediatric Pfizer.

For vaccination, the city asks that children have an identification document, preferably the CPF, and proof of address in the municipality of São Paulo, in the names of parents or guardians.

The addresses of the units that will be available to vaccinate the little ones this Saturday are available on the São Paulo City Hall website.
