He calls on citizens to take precautionary measures against the heat Medical Association of Athens (ISA), recommending that they remain in air-conditioned areas, both during the day and at night.

When the ambient temperature exceeds the upper tolerable limits and in combination with some other factors, conditions are created that are not tolerated by the human body.

Especially in urban centers, where high temperatures are combined with increased levels of air pollution, the risk increases.

The pathological conditions that follow can lead to serious complications and endanger the life of the patient.

The Medical Association of Athens calls on citizens to limit their movements and stay indoors with air conditioning. Avoid any form of exercise and physical activity outdoors (parks, etc.), not only during the day, but also at night, if the minimum temperature does not fall below 32 degrees Celsius.

“We draw attention, especially to the vulnerable groups of the population, to strictly follow the measures of prevention and prevention of pathological conditions caused by high temperatures”, pointed out the president of ISA, George Patoulis and added: “Especially people suffering from cardiovascular diseases and other diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, kidney failure, lung diseases, etc., belong to the particularly vulnerable population groups and should follow meticulously the instructions of the experts during the heat season to protect their health. We emphasize that physical exertion should be avoided, not only during the day but also at night.”

Precautions:

  • Avoiding sun exposure and stay in shaded and cool places. In case of forced exposure to the sun, a hat and dark glasses must be used. Clothing should preferably consist of thin, spacious, light-colored, mainly cotton clothing.
  • Avoidanceas far as possible, physical fatigue and work during the hot hours of the day.
  • Plenty of cool water intake or natural juices. Avoid sugary, carbonated drinks.
  • Taking light, non-fatty, salty food, divided into small frequent meals. Avoiding alcoholic beverages. Frequent cool baths, applying cold compresses.
  • Those on medication, especially those taking diuretics, tranquilizers, antihypertensives, antihistamines, B-blockers, etc. drugs must be found in constant contact with the treating doctors them in order to receive the corresponding instructions.
  • Also, those suffering from cardiovascular diseases should be in constant contact with their doctorscentral nervous and respiratory system, diabetics, kidney patients, alcoholics as well as those suffering from all kinds of serious diseases.
  • The residents of the center of Athens should limit their movements in the areas of the center characterized by high air pollution and increased traffic. Residents of the center of Athens are better off staying at home during the hot hours of the day.
  • Vulnerable population categories (infants, preschoolers, elderly, pregnant, obese, etc.) to scrupulously observe the precautionary measures and to contact their doctor immediately if they experience a symptom which, possibly, is a result of the weather conditions such as dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness, behavior disorders, nausea, vomiting, cramps, etc.
