The family of the 10-year-old child who had a cardiac arrest in Lençóis Paulista, in the interior of São Paulo, last Tuesday (18) questions the diagnosis of congenital heart disease and says they prefer to wait for the results of new tests to which she will be submitted.
The family’s position was maintained even after the Government of São Paulo and the Ministry of Health stated that “the post-vaccination adverse event was ruled out”.
The 10-year-old girl suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest about 12 hours after taking a dose of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. She is admitted to the Pediatric ICU at Unimed Hospital in Bauru, where she was transferred this Friday afternoon (21).
She would undergo an MRI exam, which ended up being postponed to next Monday (24) on the recommendation of the anesthesiologist.
“I am anxiously awaiting the result of this exam so that I can take care of my daughter and see the path we are going to follow. Only this resonance that she will do on Monday will be able to give us the final diagnosis”, says the child’s father, the military policeman. Claudimar Petenuci.
The São Paulo State Health Department concluded last Thursday (20) that the Covid-19 vaccine was not the cause of cardiac arrest.
The post-vaccination adverse event was ruled out after analysis by the Epidemiological Surveillance Center of the folder, carried out by more than ten specialists. “There is no causal relationship between vaccination and the clinical picture presented, therefore, the post-vaccination adverse event is ruled out”, reads the conclusion of the report.
The analysis showed that the episode was triggered by a rare congenital disease, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, until then unknown to the family.
This Friday (21), the Ministry of Health confirmed the analysis of the government of São Paulo and stated that “the post-vaccination adverse event was ruled out”.
“Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, hitherto undiagnosed and unknown to the family, led the child to have a tachycardia crisis, which resulted in hemodynamic instability,” said Saúde, citing the investigation carried out by the local government.
Asked about the report issued by the Epidemiological Surveillance Center, Petenuci said that it would be questionable and repeated that he prefers to wait for the results of all tests.
The child remains hospitalized in the Pediatric ICU, but the state of health is considered stable. In a note, Unimed de Botucatu reported that all data from tests and diagnoses are being provided to the competent authorities for investigation.
Ministers Marcelo Queiroga (Health) and Damares Alves (Women, Family and Human Rights) visited the child on Thursday (20). President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) called the family.
On Twitter, even after the São Paulo government concluded that the reaction was linked to a rare congenital disease, Damares said that he had a meeting with the child “hospitalized after suspected cardiac arrest on the same day he received the Covid vaccine”.
Queiroga liked Damares’ post. Both did not report that the relationship with the vaccine was already ruled out.
According to Petenuci, the ministers’ visit to Lençóis Paulista was preceded by a call from Bolsonaro.
“The president called me and asked if I could receive Minister Queiroga. He and Damares were with us and also paid a visit to my daughter,” said Petenuci. Queiroga informed the child’s parents that the Ministry of Health will closely monitor the case.
In Lençóis Paulista, where the girl was immunized, the Committee to Combat Covid-19 determined the suspension of vaccination of children between 5 and 11 years old for seven days. Until then, 46 children had been vaccinated in the city, during the campaign that began this week.
Vaccination should be resumed next Tuesday (25). According to the City Hall of Lençóis Paulista, this period is necessary for the investigation of the case and submission of reports to federal and state control bodies.
Infectologist Carlos Magno Fortaleza, a researcher and professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Unesp in Botucatu, points out that the Pfizer vaccine has been extensively tested and does not pose any risks.
“Pfizer’s Covid-19 immunizer was tested in children before it was placed on the market and did not have any serious side effects.”
