Bad weather “Elpis”: Towards snow and in the center of Athens on Monday – The forecasts in detail

Heavy snowfall and cold brought the bad weather “Elpis” that sweeps the country while especially on Monday the effects will intensify. In Attica, the snowfall will start in the morning and will intensify from noon until the pre-noon hours of Tuesday. This means, according to the data so far, snow in the center of Athens.

As SKAI meteorologist Ioanna Tsikoudi pointed out, the wave of bad weather is swirling in Eastern Europe and Russia, lowering the temperature from North to South. The situation will be similar tomorrow Sunday, with very cold in most parts of the country, with the cold front “swallowing” the whole country.

On Monday will come the peak of the wave of bad weather which will be combined with a barometric low that will put the precipitation to have snow. Heavy snowfall will continue in much of the eastern country on Tuesday, and on Wednesday the air mass will gradually begin to recede.

Today it snows mainly in the Aegean, while on Sunday the snowfall will continue affecting Evia. As for Attica on Sunday, there is a possibility to see snowfall in the North and East, which, however, will temporarily weaken in the afternoon. On the contrary, in Macedonia and Thrace from Sunday afternoon the bad weather starts to intensify on Monday, where it will snow in most of the territory (Thessaly, Central Greece, Sporades, North and Central Aegean, Peloponnese), including the basin.

The state mechanism is on its feet. The mountains of Attica are dressed in white, while the first snowfalls occurred in the center. Due to the snowfall, the traffic of vehicles on Parnithas Avenue from the cable car to both streams has been stopped since early in the morning.

In Western Macedonia, after last night’s snowfall and the very low temperatures that occur today, the movement of vehicles in many parts of the road network is carried out only with anti-skid chains.

In the Region of Thessaly, where necessary, the machines have been operating since last night, in Larissa, Magnesia, Trikala and Karditsa, with salt drops and snowfall, keeping the road network open and safe, as emphasized in a relevant announcement.

A traffic ban was imposed in Andros due to the severe bad weather.

Municipality of Athens: On alert for the problems from the bad weather “Elpis”

All the services and the human resources of the Municipality of Athens are on alert for the next 24 hours, in order to be able to deal immediately and safely with any problems that may arise in the center and the neighborhoods of Athens, in view of the bad weather “Elpis”.

With snow machines and salt

The Municipality of Athens has at its disposal the necessary supplies of salt in order, in case of severe bad weather, both main roads and regional roads to remain open for access to hospitals, health centers, but also for any necessary movement.
The Directorate of Sewerage and Public Works already has at its disposal – in order to deal with extreme frost and snowfall – five heavy vehicles and seven 4×4 vehicles equipped with salt pans, ten JcB loaders and six bobcat loaders.
Also, from the morning, all the employees of the Municipality who are handling lifting machines and trucks are on full alert to intervene at any point, if necessary. In any case, citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.

Day and night care for the homeless

Another place for the homeless in the area of ​​Neos Kosmos, is added from today to the heated rooms of the Municipality of Athens, which remain open from January 11 in order to protect our homeless citizens from the low temperatures. Thus, on a 24-hour basis, they now operate:

– The Multipurpose Homeless Center (Acharnes & Liossia)
– The Cultural Center of Grava (Taygetou 60 – tel. 2102011151 – 2102235605)
– The Friendship Club “Ascension of the Lord” in the New World (Heldrich 15 – tel. 2109249403)

The Directorate of Social Solidarity of the Municipality of Athens will examine the evolving conditions, so that depending on the needs that will arise, another heated space will be added.

In the meantime, from the beginning of the bad weather until today, the Multipurpose Homeless Center has hosted a total of 44 homeless citizens, while at the moment 22 people are hosted in the heated area of ​​the Cultural Center of Grava.

For those who, however, despite the efforts and the constant updates remain on the road, the “StreetWork” steps of the Reception and Solidarity Center of the Municipality of Athens (K.Y.D.A.) consisting of two social workers and a nurse, they will continue the shifts throughout the day and night, handing out blankets, hot drinks and clothes.

The call center of KYADA – 2105246515 is open 24 hours a day, so that citizens can report places where there are homeless people who need help.

Caring for vulnerable citizens with the “Help at Home” program

The elderly and people living alone, as well as people with disabilities and mobility difficulties can turn to the “Help at Home” service for the supply of necessary goods, medicines and basic necessities, especially in these difficult days. Where citizens can call to report problems

Throughout the bad weather, the call center of the Municipality of Athens will be fully staffed and citizens can contact to report problems. The four-digit number 1595 is in operation, as well as the telephone lines: 2105277000 and 2105287800.

Patrols in shifts 24 hours a day

The Athens Municipal Police operates with all its might for the next 24 hours. The municipal police will patrol the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Athens, in order to inform about any problems in the streets and neighborhoods of the capital.
Care for kindergartens – schools

Regarding the operation of the school units and the kindergartens, every possible effort will be made from next Monday -if there is a need- for the unhindered access of children, parents and teachers to the schools. Special care will be taken to enhance the operation of heating systems.

Shifts at the Municipal Clinics

The staff of all six Municipal Clinics of Athens will be on standby, while a medical shift will operate to deal with any emergencies in the Friendship Clubs or in other heated areas.

Cooperation with all agencies and services of the State

The Municipality of Athens is in contact with all involved civil protection services for possible problems that will be created by the upcoming wave of bad weather: Attica Region, Greek Police, Traffic and Fire Department, while it is in an “open line” with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.

Where anti-skid chains are needed in Western Macedonia

Due to last night’s snowfall and the extremely low temperatures that occur today, the movement of vehicles in many parts of the road network in Western Macedonia, is carried out only with anti-skid chains. Specifically, according to the General Regional Police Directorate of Western Macedonia, the traffic of vehicles in the regional unit of Kastoria, is carried out exclusively with the use of special type of tires or anti-skid chains on the Provincial Road Kastoria – Florina (via Vitsio km 25, from 28 km). and on the Provincial Road of Kastoria – Ioannina (via Nestori), from the 30th km to the 45th km. Provincial and Municipal road network, is carried out normally.

In the peripheral unit of Florina, the traffic of vehicles is carried out exclusively with the use of special type of tires or anti-skid chains, on the National Road Florina – Krystallopigi Border Station (via Vigla), from the 12th km to the 25th km, in the Provincial Road , from the 1st km to the 9th km. and to the mountainous Provincial and Municipal road network of the Municipality of Florina. The traffic of vehicles on the vertical axis of the Egnatia Odos (A-27) Nikis-Florina, as well as on the rest of the National and Provincial road network is carried out normally.

The traffic of vehicles, according to the General Regional Police Directorate of Western Macedonia is carried out normally on the Egnatia Odos and on the National and Provincial road network of Grevena, as well as on the Egnatia Odos, on the vertical axis of the Egnatia Odos Kozani – Ptolemaida, the National and Provincial road network of the regional unit of Kozani.

It is pointed out that from Monday to Wednesday the temperatures will be very low, and their maximum values ​​will not exceed 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

– Wear with many layers of light clothing instead of a heavy garment and wear appropriate shoes to avoid injuries due to slipperiness.
