Two elderly women who were hospitalized with Covid died this week in Jales (585 km from the capital of São Paulo), in the interior of São Paulo, while waiting to be transferred to ICUs (intensive care units).
They were waiting for vacancies via Cross (Health Services Supply Regulation Center), a service linked to the State Department of Health.
According to the Consirj (Intermunicipal Public Health Consortium of the Region of Jales), responsible for managing the UPA (emergency care unit) in Jales where they were hospitalized, the 85-year-old woman was admitted to the medical center on the 20th. and died on Sunday (23).
The other 73-year-old woman was hospitalized with Covid on the 22nd and died last Monday (24th).
According to the consortium, the two women had comorbidities. The eldest was diabetic and had kidney failure. The youngest suffered from pulmonary emphysema.
The consortium claimed to have tried to transfer the two women to the Hospital de Base in São José do Rio Preto (438 km from São Paulo), which is a reference for the region and serves the SUS (Unified Health System).
According to the consortium, on Thursday afternoon (27) another three patients with Covid-19 were waiting for transfer via Cross, one of them being intubated and the others in the ward.
According to the City Hall of Jales, the beds aimed at treating patients with Covid-19 at Santa Casa in the city were deactivated in December and the municipality awaits reopening.
Wanted, the philanthropic hospital confirmed the deactivation. Santa Casa explained that care in the flu syndrome (Covid) ward began in March 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, but that accreditation by the state government was carried out in September 2020.
“The de-accreditation of all hospitals in the region took place on December 21, 2021”, said the note from Santa Casa, which said it had asked the Regional Department of Health for the possibility of reopening and accreditation of beds. The philanthropic hospital says it also handles the case with the Legislative Assembly.
In a note, the State Department of Health said that the DRS (Regional Department of Health) of São José do Rio Preto is negotiating for the activation of new beds in Santa Casa de Jales, which will be funded by the government of São Paulo. But there were no deadlines.
Just last Tuesday (25), 171 tests were positive for the new coronavirus in Jales. Since the beginning of the pandemic, about 10,500 people have caught Covid-19 in the city of about 50,000 inhabitants and 280 patients have died.
Asked about the deaths and why the vacancies were not available, the state secretariat did not respond, saying that “information was not provided to check the cases mentioned”.
The João Doria management folder (PSDB) stated, in a note, that Cross is an intermediary service that monitors patients from all municipalities in São Paulo with the purpose of assisting in the transfer between the origin and reference services.
“Cross’s role, which works 24 hours a day, is not to create beds, but to help identify a vacancy in the nearest hospital capable of handling the case,” he said.
“The transfer of a patient does not depend exclusively on the availability of vacancies, but also on a stable clinical condition, free of infections, which allows the transfer to another health service for their own safety”, completed the text of the state ministry.
The secretariat also highlighted that, this Wednesday (26), the government announced the creation of 700 hospital vacancies in the state for the treatment of patients with Covid.
The ministry did not respond about the accreditation of Santa Casa de Jales until the publication of this report.
Contagion
The Rio Preto region, a reference for medical care in Jales, is where there is the highest transmission of the coronavirus in the state of São Paulo, because of the ômicron variant, according to the SP Covid-19 Info Tracker platform, created by researchers from USP (Universidade of São Paulo) and Unesp (University of São Paulo), with support from Fapesp (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo).
According to statisticians, who have been doing this calculation since September 2020, the Rt (rate of contagion) reached 1.9 this Wednesday (26) in the Rio Preto region.
The transmission rate in the Rio Preto region is the same as the national average and higher than the state average of 1.8.
Rt shows how many people an infected patient can transmit the new coronavirus to. That is, an index of 1.8 means that every 100 people infected transmit the disease to 180 other people.
In a statement, the prefecture said that “the increase in Covid transmission did not only happen in Rio Preto, but in the country and in the world in general due to the ômicron variant”.
According to the municipal administration, on Monday (24) ten infirmary beds were opened at the UIB (basic hospitalization unit) Fraternidade and, next Monday (31), another 12 ICU beds and 12 infirmary will be opened in Santa Casa. of Rio Preto, in agreement with the city hall.
“An exclusive respiratory center was also created for the care of patients with flu syndromes and the services provided by telemedicine were expanded,” the note added.
