Two deaths from leptospirosis have occurred in Corfu according to ERT.

In particular, a male resident died on Friday of Karousades village in northern Corfu after a short hospitalization. The man was infected with leptospirosis.

This is the second fatal case of leptospirosis in this particular village since Maywhile cross-referenced information from ERT indicates that there was also third case who was transferred in critical condition to an Athens hospital also in May, however, his condition improved and he was out of danger.

EODY commands

The two deaths have been confirmed by the Corfu Hospital, which informed the EODY following the relevant protocol, while for the second incident, after the positive sample of the bacterial control, the result of the molecular test is expected. The EODY today instructed the Regional Health Directorate to proceed with all the necessary actions that include epidemiological research in the area as well as disinfection and myocide.

It should be noted that leptospirosis is not transmitted from person to person, but by contact (through the mouth, nose, conjunctiva) or consumption of water contaminated with animal urine.

EODY gives the following precautionary instructions on its website:

➢ Rodent control in homes, yards, warehouses

➢ Removal of waste around the houses to avoid attracting rodents

➢ Cleaning of storage areas

➢ Removal of food and water residues

➢ Fencing and safekeeping of stored food, animal feed or agricultural products

➢ Blocking possible holes / passageways in the house, placing grain

➢ Disinfection and thorough cleaning of possibly contaminated areas (stables, slaughterhouses, butchers, etc.)

➢ Use of protective clothing during agricultural work (wellies, gloves, waterproof clothing, etc.)

➢ Washing hands and cleaning skin abrasions (if possible with soap) after contact with urine, animals, soil or standing water

➢ Covering open wounds with waterproof adhesive bandages during outdoor work

➢ Very good washing of fruits and vegetables before consumption or immersion in hot water (>50°C) of vegetables and other agricultural products that have been in contact with soil and are eaten raw. Avoid consumption straight from the field

➢ Drainage of stagnant water

➢ Avoiding swimming or contact with potentially contaminated water (rivers, lakes, water bodies)

➢ Regular cutting of grass

➢ Preventive vaccination of pets
