Breastfeeding wears its “goods”, to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week as it is done every year, from November 1 to 7 in Greece. This year’s slogan-Theme of Breastfeeding Week is: ENCOURAGE BREASTFEEDING: Making a difference for working parents.
Its World Breastfeeding Week World Alliance Action (WABA) is a global campaign to inform and raise awareness about breastfeeding issues.
As everyone knows by now, breastfeeding provides vital benefits for the health of the child as well as the health of the mother. It is a process through which the child will be able to create solid foundations for his physical and mental development, given that mother’s milk is the ideal food for humans.
This year’s Breastfeeding Week focuses on breastfeeding and work, providing a best-practice strategy to support basic maternity rights related to breastfeeding in the workplace in different countries, with different contract patterns, and to promote actions that can be taken to ensure breastfeeding for all women without exception wherever they work.
Women should not have a dilemma between breastfeeding their children and working. A major issue is to ensure that women breastfeed for as long as they wish and to give them basic maternity benefits. These are: h Maternity leave paid for at least 18 weeks, ideally more than 6 months; flexible schedule on their return to work, special designed spaces and leave with pay for breastfeeding the pumping milk while working. Breastfeeding women should be supported by health professionals to create an individual breast milk bank and to provide them with information on the correct use of a pump, storage and transfer of breast milk, when required for their child’s feeding needs.
By encouraging breastfeeding among working women, societies function better, the health of children and women improves, and a healthy workforce is created for the future.
