The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the health sector has already produced writing samples with very good results. The evolution of medical technologies combined with the automatic analysis of medical data through artificial intelligence are contributing to a revolution in the health sector with particularly favorable results.
One of the areas where Artificial Intelligence is particularly promising is Precision Imaging, an area that plays a key role in the overall Personalized-based Precision Medicine.
MITERA’s Breast Imaging Center participates in the ODELIA research project funded by the European Union and launched on January 1, 2023. The goal of ODELIA is a revolutionary approach of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of breast imaging through the use of “swarm” learning technique » (Swarm Learning).
The definition of Artificial Intelligence is quite simple. The goal is to develop intelligent algorithms and solutions that will allow computers to reproduce or even exceed human capabilities in specific problems, making it a useful tool for the physician. AI models in health have enormous potential to improve decision-making in clinical practice, resulting in earlier, better and more accurate disease diagnoses, prognoses and treatments.
One of the key problems in the application of Artificial Intelligence in health is the lack of large enough data sets to train the models. This is particularly true for cancer detection, where data collection faces serious practical, ethical and legal hurdles. The ODELIA project aims to address these obstacles by implementing “swarm” learning, a new approach that allows training AI medical algorithms while keeping sensitive data private and not shared.
Swarm learning is a method of training artificial intelligence models where many devices work together. Each device trains its own model with its own data and shares its knowledge with other devices. Working together, the devices create a more accurate and efficient AI model. This approach has advantages over traditional methods because it makes better use of available resources and helps protect data privacy. Additionally, collective knowledge from multiple devices can help create more robust and reliable models.
The successful completion of the ODELIA project is expected to encourage collaborating partners to act as cores for the exponential growth of the network and to expand the project to a multitude of medical applications. This will provide patients, healthcare providers and citizens in Europe with a digital infrastructure that enables the development of expert-level AI tools on large volumes of data, without compromising data security and privacy.
The success of the ODELIA project will mark a major advance in the field of AI in health, paving the way for the development of even more ground-breaking AI applications in the future. The development of such applications will have a significant impact on improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of citizens.
The ODELIA program involves researchers from twelve Academic institutions and companies from various European countries such as Greece, Austria, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Partners, in addition to MITERA, include the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research, Aachen University Hospital, Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology, Radboud University Medical Center, University Medical Center Utrecht, Ribera Salud Hospital, Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Medicine MEVIS, OSIMIS, Technische Universität Dresden, University of Zurich and University of Cambridge.
