More than 106,000 EU citizens were diagnosed with melanoma in 2020, making it skin cancer to the sixth most common cancer and one of the twenty most common causes of cancer death.

Of concern is the fact that it is a type of cancer that is growing rapidly, with the incidence expected to continue its growth course.

As stated by Professor Alexandros Stratigos, President of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology and Director of the 1st Clinic of Venereal and Dermatological Diseases of the Medical School of EKPA – Andreas Syggros Hospital, “it is worth mentioning that the majority of cases of skin cancer“, can be prevented or treated if diagnosed early, while the effects of the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation can be significantly reduced if more conscious and responsible behaviors are adopted.”

Looking forward to the most effective prevention against melanoma and skin cancer, the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology) together with 21 other international organizations and 34 European scientific societies, joined forces in signing a joint statement calling on the European Commission to step up its efforts with all necessary actions under the recent European project for the fight against cancer (Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan).

The actions These are based on five pillars: the best information and education about skin cancer, the adoption of measures to protect citizens from excessive exposure to natural and artificial UV radiation, targeted testing in high-risk groups for early diagnosis skin cancer, the recognition of skin cancer as an occupational disease and the implementation of UV protection measures for outdoor workers and the more complete recording of skin cancer cases in Europe for better surveillance and preventive interventions.
