Mission to the Czech Republic – by Aris Galanopoulos
In Prague, the new Porsche Panamera was officially unveiled in a static presentation on the 9th floor, inside an… apartment. But let’s start things from the beginning!
The third generation of the Porsche Panamera, the luxury sports sedan, has been upgraded aesthetically, technologically and mechanically. However, our anxiety to meet her kept growing, especially when we got to the point of going through a Prague shelter and then climbing to the 9th floor of an apartment building. There, a specially designed apartment for the event housed, among other things, the new Porsche Panamera.
For the first time with an active chassis
The new Porsche Panamera inaugurates a number of systems, which we are seeing for the first time. The 3rd generation Panamera features twin-valve, two-chamber air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard equipment. But what impressed us is the optional innovative active suspension system Porsche Active Ride. Among other things, PAR absorbs turbulence almost completely. In dynamic driving conditions, it promises perfect grip on the road surface thanks to the balanced distribution of the loads on the wheels.
It “leans” like… a motorcycle
When the corresponding function is activated, the suspension can overcompensate for reduced body roll to reduce the acceleration forces exerted on the occupants. Thus, with this setting selected, the new Panamera “leans” in the corners as if it were a motorcycle. It dips the front when accelerating and the rear when decelerating. Once the car is stationary, the Porsche Active Ride suspension system raises the body to the appropriate height for comfortable entry or exit.
More efficient
In terms of engines, Porsche offers the new Panamera in more improved versions with the basic one starting at 353 hp thanks to the 2.9 bi-turbo V6 engine with a torque of 500 Nm – an increase of 23 hp and 50 Nm compared to the his predecessor. Thus, the acceleration of the Panamera from 0 to 100 km/h is reduced to 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 272 km/h. The four-wheel-drive Panamera 4 needs just 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h.
At the top is the explosive 680 hp E-Hybrid. The latter is equipped with a 4-liter turbocharged V8 engine, which cooperates with a 140 kW electric motor. The torque reaches 930 Nm. Porsche integrates the electric motor into the housing of the completely redesigned eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Eliminating the separate motor housing saves around five kilograms of weight. The integration of the unit within the transmission oil circuit also optimizes the heat balance of the electric drive system and allows for higher constant efficiency of the electric motor.
The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 315 km/h. Its battery capacity is now 25.9 kWh. This ensures an electric range of up to 91 km in the combined cycle according to WLTP or 83–93 km in the city. Of course, we will verify this when we drive it. The new 11 kW AC charger installed in the vehicle reduces the charging time at suitable charging stations to 2 hours and 39 minutes.
Luxurious aura inside and out
The new Panamera retains the characteristic lines and proportions of the famous Porsche model. It is 5,052 mm long. (Executive: 5,202 mm), width 1,937 mm. and a height of 1,423 mm. (Executive: 1,428 mm). Its completely renewed appearance gives the sports sedan an even more expressive and sporty look.
Porsche Driver Experience technology in the cockpit achieves the ideal balance between digital and analog controls and places along the driver’s axis the command input and output required for driving.
An optional passenger display, like the one seen in the new Porsche Cayenne, integrates the passenger into the driving experience. The 10.9-inch screen displays the selected vehicle’s performance data. It also allows the infotainment system to be operated and supports video streaming functions with the car on the move. In order not to distract the person behind the wheel, the passenger display is not visible from the driver’s seat.
The new Porsche Panamera is already available to order in our country with a starting price of 153,270 euros, while in the case of the Panamera 4 the price rises to 158,920 euros. Finally, the top Turbo E-Hybrid version starts at 212,940 euros.
