Seventy-three deaths from Covid-19 and 8 from flu were recorded the week of January 15, 2024 – January 21, 2024according to the epidemiological EODY report.

According to EODY, the number of patients with a COVID-19 infection who are being treated intubated is 69 and presented a decrease from the average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks. At the same time, the surveillance of the viral load in municipal wastewater showed a reduction in the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in 8 of the 9 areas tested.

THE positivity for influenza in the community (sentinel network) remains above 10% (seasonal threshold for the onset of epidemic influenza activity according to ECDC) and showed a significant decrease compared to the previous week.

19 new severe cases of influenza with hospitalization in the ICU were recorded, while 8 new deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.

Influenza syndromes (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of influenza cases per 1,000 visits showed a decrease compared to
last week.

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

The positivity in all tested samples showed a significant decrease regarding
last week.
The number of admissions (n=842) showed a decrease of 45% compared to the average weekly number

admissions in the previous 4 weeks (n=1,539) and was lower than the number of admissions
the corresponding week of 2023 (n=1,535).
The number of new intubations (n=29) showed a decrease compared to the average weekly number

of new intubations during the previous 4 weeks (n=32) and was lower than the number of
of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 (n=51).
The number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 69.

73 deaths were recorded with a median age of 87 years (range 52-97 years). The number of deaths
showed a decrease compared to the average weekly number of deaths in the previous 4 weeks
(n=101) and was lower than the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 (n=183)
In week 51 and 52, the most frequent sub-variant of BA.2 was JN.1 ranging around 50%,

followed by EG.5 (30%)
Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed a reduction in virus circulation SARS-CoV-2 in 8
of the 9 areas checked.

Influenza virus

Influenza positivity in the community (sentinel network) remains above 10% (seasonal start limit of
of influenza epidemic activity according to the ECDC) and showed a significant decrease compared to
last week.
19 new serious cases with hospitalization in ICU were registeredwhile 8 new deaths were recorded from
laboratory confirmed influenza. 2 serious laboratory cases were reported retrospectively
of confirmed influenza with hospitalization in ICU, with an admission date within the week of 02/2024.
From week 40/2023 to week 03/2024, 85 people were hospitalized with labs
confirmed influenza in the ICU and 25 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.
From week 40/2023 to week 03/2024, 235 strains of influenza have been standardized,
derived from hospital samples and community sentinel samples, of which 232 (99%)
were type A and 3 (1%) type B.
✓ Overall, 214 type A strains have been subtyped in the two Influenza Reference Centers. 198 (92.5%)
belonged to subtype A(H1)pdm09 and 16 (7.5%) to subtype A(H3).
