Another good news from the scientists who have dedicated their lives to the “fight” against cancer. Researchers from Ewha Womens Universityin Seoul, South Korea, have succeeded in creating a powerful chemical compound that can “exterminate” cancer cells, as the journal’s findings reveal Angewandte Chemie.

Scientists have created a new anti-cancer drug by controlling calcium levels in cells, the key to an ‘anti-cancer’ formula. Usually, too many calcium ions are harmful and can cause “suffocation” to elements of healthy cell composition, such as mitochondria.

So, scientists have found a way to use this harmful excess influx to repel and destroy cancer cells in the body through what they call a “calcium storm.”

It was also found that exposure to infrared light would facilitate the new drug. The injectable formula was tested on mice that had tumors affected by specially modified silica beads that showed no harm to the rodents. Once it reached their bloodstream, the team was able to determine that the drug successfully reached the tumor and was activated within the presence of infrared light. Within just a few days, their tumors were gone!

Now, the research team is optimistic that this formula can also be used to advance biomedical research. The announcement also follows a new machine learning way to accurately screen for ovarian cancer.
