The Senate will inaugurate this Tuesday afternoon (3 pm) a permanent memorial to honor the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Contrary to what was initially planned, the memorial will be installed inside the Senate, in an auditorium, and not in the water mirrors in front of the National Congress.
The inauguration will count with the participation of the president of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and the summit of the CPI da Covid, who worked between April and October of last year investigating crimes and omissions during the fight against the pandemic. The president of the commission Omar Aziz (PSD-AM), the vice-president Randolfe Rodrigo (Rede-AP) and the rapporteur Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) will be present.
A representative of the association of victims of the pandemic will also be present.
The creation of a memorial in honor of those killed as a result of the pandemic was suggested by members of the Covid CPI, who approved a request providing for its installation.
The Senate floor later passed a draft resolution authorizing the installation of the memorial. The initial project prepared at the request of members of the Covid CPI provided for the construction of the memorial in a point visible to the public, in front of the National Congress. Senator Randolfe Rodrigues even released a video of the monument, which would have 27 stones placed in the water mirror in honor of the victims of each unit of the federation.
The memorial that will open this Tuesday, however, will be inside the Senate. The Presidency of the House informed that the change was due to the “architectural impact” that would have with the installation in the water mirror and eventual conflicts with the organs of preservation of the patrimony, since the building of the National Congress is registered.
The memorial will have a 15-meter long platform, where there will be 27 internally lit marble prisms, which will symbolize large candles in honor of the victims of the pandemic in each unit of the federation.
The project by architects Vanessa Novais Bhering and André Luiz de Souza Castro will be installed in the foyer of the Petrônio Portela auditorium and will be open to visitors.
“This Tuesday we will inaugurate the Memorial to the victims of Covid. In addition to homage, it is reparation for the future. Solidarity with the families of the memory that hurts forever. Mainly, it is the renewal of the CPI’s commitment to Brazil: there are culprits; whoever did this will pay”, wrote senator Renan Calheiros on social media.
This Sunday, Brazil reached the mark of 638,449 deaths from Covid-19 and 27,483,031 people infected by Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.
The final report of the Covid CPI recommended the indictment of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), 77 other people and two companies. Among the indictment proposals, there are ministers of state, sons of the chief executive, parliamentarians, lobbyists, doctors, among others.
One day before the inauguration of the memorial, this Monday (14), a public hearing was held in the Senate to discuss the mandatory nature of the so-called vaccination passport. The event was chaired by Senator Eduardo Girão (Podemos-CE), who was part of the government shock troops during the Covid CPI. Politicians, academics and doctors who defend theses considered denialist were invited.
Interestingly, one of the guests is virologist Paolo Zanotto, whose indictment was recommended by the Covid CPI’s final report.
