The Secretary of Primary Care of the Ministry of Health, Rhafael Camara Medeiros Parente, will take over as deputy minister of the portfolio from this Wednesday (23) during the absence of the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga.
The appointment, signed by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and Queiroga, was published in the Official Gazette this Tuesday (22). He will remain in the role until February 27.
According to the press office of the Ministry of Health, during this period the minister and the executive secretary of the portfolio, Rodrigo Cruz, will be in the United States. One of the events they will participate in is organized by the UN (United Nations) and will address the promotion of universal vaccination efforts.
Related to the so-called ideological wing of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Parente holds a master’s degree in public health from UERJ, a doctor in gynecology from Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo) and advisor to the CFM (Federal Council of Medicine).
Linked to the Institute of Gynecology at UFRJ, Parente defends, in debates, a position against legalizing abortion. In October 2019, he wrote an article in sheet against what he called “pro-abortion activism”.
In the text, he said that the militancy used false data on the impact of illegal abortion and that, therefore, the situation should not be considered a public health problem.
On several occasions, Câmara has challenged the statistics of deaths caused by clandestine abortions in Brazil. He claims the numbers are “overestimated in bad faith”.
He has also defended a sexual abstinence project proposed by the Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves.
The Secretariat that he currently heads is responsible for organizing actions aimed at health units and guidelines for basic care in the service in the network.
Parente took over in June 2020 in place of Erno Harzheim, who left office at the end of April, after the departure of former minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta.
