The National Blood Donation Center (EKEA) was visited on Wednesday morning by the Deputy Minister of Health Mina Gaga.

Ms. Gaga was at the premises where the blood stock test is performed, while she had the opportunity to talk with the president of the Center Panagiotis Katsivelas, the scientifically responsible hematologist Konstantinos Stamoulis, as well as with all the scientific staff.

“The Center has modern equipment, while the dedication and contribution of the people who work day and night to control the blood is remarkable. Thanks to their work, we can guarantee the safety of transfused blood to patients who need it. “Each unit of blood offered by the voluntary blood donors is molecularly checked and certified before it is used”, stressed the Deputy Minister, recalling the highest value of the blood supply.

“There are thousands of our fellow human beings who need regular transfusions and it is very important that voluntary blood donation continues unhindered, which is safe and completely safe and is a real gift of life,” Gaga said.

EKEA checks on an annual basis at least 310,000 units of blood (amount corresponding to more than half of the country’s blood reserves), covering the entire geographical area of ​​central Greece, the Peloponnese, the islands and Crete (the rest controlled in Thessaloniki).

From the beginning of the pandemic until the end of 2021, 1.2 million samples for coronavirus were also molecularly tested at EKEA. Covid tests continue this year, with an analysis of 4,200 PCR samples on a daily basis.
