Increased positivity of the coronavirus, with 21 deaths, but also a new large increase in admissions to hospitals, is recorded in the EODY report for the period from July 1 to 7, published on Thursday.

In detail according to the EODY report

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

✓Increased activity of the virus is recorded, with an increasing trend in admissions for hospitalization. Vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) are advised to scrupulously follow preventive measures against respiratory infections and to seek medical advice in time for symptoms, in order to provide timely treatment. At the same time, it is recommended to the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.
✓The positivity in all the tested samples showed an increase compared to the previous week.
✓The number of new imports was 575 and shows an increasing trend. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 380, and the number of admissions in the corresponding week in 2023 was 198.
✓The number of new intubations was nine. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous four weeks was four, and the number of intubations in the corresponding week in 2023 was five.
✓The number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 13.
✓The number of deaths was 21. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 13 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 16.
✓BA.2.86 with mutations F456L and R346T (FLiRT – new class of mutant strains under monitoring since 4/6) seems to be prevalent in recent weeks.
✓Surveillance of the viral load in municipal wastewater showed an increase in the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in eight of the ten areas tested.

Influenza virus

✓ No positive samples for influenza were found both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
✓ No new serious case with hospitalization in ICU, nor new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza was recorded.
✓ From week 40/2023 to week 27/2024, 148 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza
in the ICU and 71 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.
✓ From week 40/2023 to week 27/2024, 1,064 influenza strains have been standardized (derived from community Sentinel samples, from SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks),
of which 557 (52%) were type A and 507 (48%) type B. From week 10 onwards there is a prevalence of type B, both in the community (Sentinel PHC surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network ).
✓ In total, 539 type A strains have been subtyped in the two Influenza Reference Centers. 494 (92%) belonged to subtype A(H1)pdm09 and 45 (8%) to subtype A(H3).

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

✓ No positive samples were found both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
