“This is the old variant,” said the Philippines health minister, referring to the clade 2 variant, which is considered less dangerous than the clade 1b that is spreading in Africa
Her strain of the virus mpox which was detected in a patient on Philippines is not linked to the current outbreak in Africa, the country’s health authorities announced today.
The Philippines announced on Monday that a 33-year-old man had been diagnosed with mpox, and testing to determine the genetic sequence of the strain of the virus from which he was infected was completed today.
“This is the old variant,” Philippine Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa told AFP, referring to the clade 2 variant, which is considered less dangerous than the clade 1b currently spreading on the African continent.
The patient remains in hospital quarantine and has not traveled outside the Philippines, the minister clarified.
The re-emergence of mpox in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), but also in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, prompted the World Health Organization to declare last week a public health emergency of international concern, the highest level of alert .
His warning concerns the clade 1b variant of the mpox virus.
This disease, formerly called monkey pox, is transmitted from animals to humans, but also through close physical contact between humans. It causes fever, muscle aches and skin lesions.
