The mayor of Rio do Sul (197 km from Florianópolis), José Thomé (PSD), published a video on his Instagram account last Thursday (3), announcing a decree that makes the use of mask optional in the municipality for any age. He says that the decision is based on the epidemiological and vaccine situation.
“We now have the technical condition here to make the use of a mask optional, throughout the territory of the municipality, regardless of age. With the exception of health establishments”, he says.
“We understand that allowing the entire population to use a mask in Rio do Sul is, yes, possible, because we have a favorable situation. Furthermore, this is only possible thanks to the government’s actions and its responsibility.”
Thomé also cites the mayor of Chapecó, João Rodrigues, who also signed a decree making the use of the mask optional in the municipality. The prefecture website points out that the case does not apply to people who are sick or suspected of being contaminated by the new coronavirus.
“We have to stop making people go through embarrassment”, says Rodrigues in a video also published on Instagram.
“What are you going to tell me about the parties that took place during Carnival throughout the national territory, in the clubs here in Chapecó? Let’s stop this falsehood, this big lie and let’s get back to normality and, if necessary, in the future, we can review this position.”
The Public Ministry of Santa Catarina analyzes the flexibility rules adopted in the two municipalities. The Santa Catarina government said that it only manifests itself on its own decrees.
The city halls’ announcements come after the country saw a rise in Covid-19 cases at the start of 2022, amid the advance of the omnin variant.
On social media, Bolsonarista businessman Luciano Hang, from the Havan chain of stores, praised the mayor of Rio do Sul for the decision. “A good leader is one who has the courage to make the right decision,” wrote the businessman.
“It’s time for great news. Let’s go back to living normally. And in your city, how is the mayor acting?”, he asked.
