The substance acrylamide, which appears in twice the amount in this particular type of coffee, has been assessed as a carcinogen
Instant coffee is the firm favorite in the UK, but experts are now warning that drinking too much can increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
That’s because the popular—and no doubt favorite for many of us—beverage contains twice as much acrylamide as ground coffee—a chemical produced when foods, including coffee beans, are cooked at high temperatures.
It has been declared a “problem human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), meaning there is evidence that the chemical can cause cancer in humans.
Laboratory tests, the Daily Mail points out, have revealed that dietary acrylamide causes lung and reproductive cancer in animals, and scientists agree that it could potentially cause cancer in humans, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
A Polish study from 2013 that analyzed 42 coffee samples, including ten instant coffees, revealed that instant coffee had twice as much acrylamide as freshly ground coffee.
However, let’s not panic because we would have to drink about ten cups of instant coffee a day for our intake of acrylamide to be problematic, according to researchers at McGill University in Canada.
At the same time, although instant coffee contains acrylamide, it has more antioxidants than ground coffee, which protect against cell damage.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Dr Pál Maurovich-Horvat, director of medical imaging at Semmelweis University in Budapest, told the Telegraph that instant coffee contains melanoidins, an antioxidant that increases the diversity of bacteria in your gut and may also help protect against diseases.
