Professor of Pulmonology Nikos Tzanakis spoke to SKAI about the sub-variant of Omicron, Omicron 2, emphasizing that he is expected to displace Omicron.
“We live in the constellation of Omicron 2,” said the doctor, stating that sub-variation accounts for 70% of new cases and hospitalizations.
He explained that “it is not capable of causing a new wave, similar to Omicron”, but it is capable of prolonging the existing wave and we can reach 30,000-35,000 cases, if we are not careful.
The number of deaths, he estimates, will not rise.
Regarding vaccination and immunity, he said that those who recently became ill with Omicron or took the 3rd dose 2 months ago have great protection against Omicron 2.
He also clarified that “it does not seem to be more dangerous than Omicron on a clinical level, but it is 50% more contagious».
“Omicron 2 penetrates the care structures of vulnerable people through vaccinated staff members who may be asymptomatic,” he added.
Finally, for the 4th dose of the vaccine, he stressed that it is not discussed for the general population.
