Its health authorities of Kosovo announced today that they had detected its first case monkey pox in the country to a man who had recently returned from Africa.

The Public Health Institute of Kosovo announced that a 30-year-old Kosovar man was admitted to the hospital on December 24 after returning from the West African country. It does not name the country.

“His symptoms were fever, chills and skin changes on the face and hands,” the institute said in a statement, adding that the patient appeared stable.

Health authorities have traced all the people the patient had been in contact with and shared recommendations for infection prevention and control measures.

The World Health Organization declared in late November that the monkeypox outbreak remained a public health emergency.

It declared a state of emergency in August when a new form of the disease spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo to neighboring countries.

Monkeypox is a usually mild viral infection.

Symptoms include fever, headaches and skin lesions.
