Entities from bars, restaurants, shopping malls, supermarkets and private schools in São Paulo state that they will follow the measure announced by Governor João Doria (PSDB), this Thursday (17), to make the use of masks more flexible in closed environments in the state of São Paulo. . The Catholic Church, however, must still recommend the use of the item.
Hospitals, health services, public transport and access points such as subway and train stations and bus terminals, however, are exceptions. In these places, protection against Covid remains mandatory in the state (understand the rules).
As the São Paulo government had already relaxed the use of a mask in open environments, it was common for people to enter bars and restaurants without the item.
Joaquim Saraiva, president of Abrasel-SP (Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants), says that the sector had already noticed a tendency among customers to no longer use the mask.
“Some commented that they no longer saw the point of not wearing a mask in an open environment and putting it on when they entered a closed environment.
Saraiva says that, despite signs of improvement from the pandemic in the country, bars and restaurants will be instructed to maintain protective measures. “Our greatest care continues, such as environmental hygiene and gel alcohol, this we will continue to follow.”
Another sector benefited from the decree is the São Paulo commerce. For Ricardo Patah, president of the Trade Union of São Paulo, “within the scenario in which we are living, it is a very reasonable measure”. The entity covers establishments such as supermarkets and clothing and construction material stores.
He recalls that service professionals worked throughout the health crisis and that measures were taken to reduce risks, such as physical protection of attendants and also the lowest number of people per square meter.
“We will continue to strengthen and educate people so that people use gel alcohol, wash their hands and, if possible, keep their own masks”, says the union leader. “If it is possible, even with the decree, to wear a mask. It is an expanded prevention, better for all of us.”
In a note, Abrasce (Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers) states that “it will follow the determinations of the authorities of São Paulo, based on scientific guidelines, regarding the end of mandatory masks”.
For Benjamin Ribeiro da Silva, president of Sieeesp (Union of Educational Establishments in the State of São Paulo), the decision of the São Paulo government took a long time to be implemented. “The child in the private school has already suffered too much. The use of a mask is totally impersonal, the child cannot use cognitive skills properly”, he says.
He says that the entity sent a letter last week to the state education secretary and the governor requesting a review of health protocols. In the document, the impact of the pandemic on student literacy is cited.
The Archdiocese of São Paulo says that it respects the decision of the São Paulo government, but that it will give other guidelines to those who attend the internal environments of churches and ecclesial organizations.
The justification, according to the religious entity, is “not to jeopardize the health of elderly people, with comorbidities or those who are not yet fully vaccinated against Covid-19”.
“It is important that preventive care is still maintained, such as hand hygiene, cleaning and ventilation of environments”, he says, in a note.
