Moderna has applied to the FDA for approval of the 2nd booster dose of its adult vaccine

by

THE Moderna announced that it had applied to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of a second booster dose of its covid-19 vaccine for all adults.

The request concerns “adults over the age of 18 who have already received a booster dose,” the pharmaceutical company said in a statement.

A few days ago the Pfizer and BioNTech have asked the FDA to approve a second booster dose of their covid-19 vaccine, but only for adults over 65 years of age.

Moderna has chosen to include all adults over the age of 18 in order to “offer flexibility” to health authorities, who should define the “appropriate use” of this dose, for example for the elderly or those suffering from comorbidities, she said.

The pharmaceutical company said it had based part of its request on “data recently published in the US and Israel following the appearance of the (variant strain) Omicron” of the coronavirus.

Israel was the first country to launch a fourth dose of covid-19 vaccine in early January over the age of 60, and by the end of the same month the program had been extended to all vulnerable adults over the age of 18. groups.

Some countries – such as Denmark, Spain, Germany and Sweden – already give a fourth dose of the vaccine to specific population groups, such as the elderly and vulnerable groups.

However, an Israeli study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a second booster dose of existing mRNA vaccines offered a “marginal benefit” in protecting against covid-19 infection in young adults without health problems.

The results of this research, however, should be considered carefully, as a small number of people participated in it.
