Gonorrhea cases in England exceeded 85,000 in 2023, the highest level since the start of recordings in 1918
A gonorrhea vaccine will be released in England as part of a worldwide first program, according to officials according to the Guardian.
This move, which has been welcomed as a “milestone for sexual health”, will aim to tackle the increasing levels of sexually transmitted infection.
Gonorrhea cases in England exceeded 85,000 in 2023, the highest level since the start of recordings in 1918, with warnings of the resilience of some antibiotic executives.
The vaccine is an existing, known as 4cmenb, which is currently used against meningitis B, a severe bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and sepsis.
Dr. Amanda Doyle, Director of Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, said: “The launch of a worldwide first gonorrhea vaccination is a huge step forward for sexual health and will be vital to protecting people, Antibiotics of the bacterium executives. “
Eligible patients will be identified and updated in the coming weeks, and the vaccine will be offered through the sexual health services taken by local authorities since August 1st.
The appointment will also be offered vaccines for the monitoring of monkeys, human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis A and b.
It is noted that gonorrhea is the second most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the UK.
Symptoms may include urination pain. For women, symptoms may include lower abdominal pain or bleeding between periods. However, many people have no symptoms.
Studies by the Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee (JCVI) show that the 4cmenb vaccine has between 32.7% and 42% efficiency against gonorrhea, and while vaccination will reduce the risk of infection, it does not completely eliminate it.
However, JCVI said vaccination would be beneficial, as the previous gonorrhea infection is considered to provide little protection against future infections.
The program comes amid warnings that the cases of gonorrhea that are resistant to antibiotic ceftriaxone – usually the first line of treatment – grow in England. This means that these bacteria have developed the ability to survive and multiply even when exposed to the antibiotic.
Health Minister Ashley Dalton urged citizens to make the vaccine “not only to be safe but also to help with the increasing threat of antibiotic resistance”.
