A deposit of 6.1 billion oil barrels estimates that there is a Diyarbakir basin in southeastern Turkey, by the US oil company Continental Resources, the Turkish Minister of Energy said.
Continental Resources and the Turkish National Petroleum Company TPAO signed a joint venture agreement on the extraction of shale oil in the basin.
“The current annual Turkish imports (crude) oil are 365 million barrels. So the 6.1 billion barrels of the deposit is a wonderful number, “Energy Minister Alpslan Bayraktar told reporters during a visit this week to southeastern Turkey.
The minister had previously stated that the March agreement was opening up “a new era in local oil exploration” with Turkey considering a key to discovering shale oil and gas. It aims to produce shale gas in the northwestern region of Eastern Thrace, Bayraktar said.
“Shale oil and shale gas could change the data,” he said.
Continental Resources did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
