Two in three fish, 40% of eggs and one quarter of milk contain at least one of four ‘Ever Endless Chemicals’ (PFAS) or otherwise overflowed alkylated substances) subject to regulatory boundaries in some foodaccording to NGO Générations Futures, which denounces the “extensive contamination” of food.
The NGO highlights the difficulties in the data collection as only a few of these numerous PFAS must be controlled in food.
The organization adds that “only eight countries have submitted data” to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for 2023.
In its report, published today, Générations Futures analyzes data from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and France, limited to certain foods, which shows that the total contamination is “undervalued”.
Result; “69% of fish, 55% of steps, 55% of mollusks, 39% of eggs, 27% of shellfish, 23% of milk and 14% of meat contain at least one of four PFAS controlled ‘by the EU, which has established Maximum levels for ‘only’ four substances (PFOS, PFOA, PFHXS, PFNA) to these products.
The NGO disapproves of the absence of this list of baby foods, fruits, vegetables, cereals and dairy products seeking to expand the list with the measured PFAS.
The organization points out that Pfas used in industry, in weeds such as Floufenasett, widely used and recently banned in the EU, but also in packaging and to utensilthey are likely to infect “whole food chain”.
“Nutrition is determined (by EFSA) as the main source of exposure to PFAS for the population”, but data on PFAS food content is particularly incomplete and the regulations are “outdated and inadequate to protect consumer health”, as they only lead to “
EFSA has specified ‘tolerated weekly hiring for the sum of four adjustable PFAS in 4.4 ng(nanogram)/kg body weight per week “, but the regulatory boundaries” do not allow us to stay under it, “the NGO points out.
A four -year -old child, eating an egg “at the conformity limit”, would thus consume “140% of the tolerable amount” PFAS for a whole week of nutrition. “Consuming 500 grams of meat at the conformity limit corresponds to two and a half times the tolerable weekly intake for a 60kg adult.”
