Hospitalizations caused by Covid-19 continue to decline after the end of the mandatory use of masks in closed environments in the state of São Paulo, announced by Governor João Doria (PSDB) on the 17th.

The state recorded this Wednesday (30) less than 2,000 patients hospitalized due to the disease, the lowest number since March 2020. “The fall of the pandemic occurs homogeneously throughout the state and this is a direct result of vaccination”, Doria said at a press conference.

The current number of hospitalizations represents a drop of 84% compared to the end of January, when there was the peak of contamination caused by the ômicron variant. The occupancy rate of ICU beds is 23.3% in the state and 28.6% in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

Asked about the exact date on which he will leave the state government, Doria said he will speak about it in an interview scheduled for this Thursday (31). According to the electoral law, the maximum period ends next Saturday (2). “I know you are crazy to talk about elections, PSDB, Eduardo Leite, but only tomorrow”, said the governor.

The accumulated period of two weeks is the period used as a reference to define the behavior of epidemiological data accurately, since the period is effective in dissolving distortions in the assessments made day by day, for example.

The end of the mandatory use of masks in open environments was decreed on March 9.

According to data released by the government, in the epidemiological week ended on the 26th, the daily average of new admissions was 196. Compared to other weeks this year, it is the lowest number.

According to the governor, the beds until then intended for the treatment of Covid-19 will be used for patients with other diseases. Of the 91 state hospitals in São Paulo, 41 still have beds occupied by coronavirus patients.

The coordinator of the scientific committee of the state government, Paulo Menezes, said that the population of the state is in a very safe epidemiological position, which gives tranquility in relation to the samba school parades scheduled for April.

According to João Gabbardo, executive coordinator of the Scientific Committee of the state government, there was no negative impact on the pandemic rates as a result of the easing of the use of masks.

The use of the item is still required in hospitals, health services, public transport and access places such as subway and train stations and bus terminals. (understand the rules).

In addition, it remains mandatory on airplanes and in controlled access spaces at airports, such as the boarding area, as per Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) rule.
