Few people were surprised, at the beginning of the current pandemic, to find Brazilian scientists in the main English university centers or in the administration of the WHO (World Health Organization).
In Brazil, some scientists emigrate willingly, in search of better incentives for their research. Others, by revolutions or as a result of persecutions, as in the years of lead.
For the countries that receive these emigrants, there is a great benefit. They did not invest in the training of these professionals, but they will benefit from their knowledge and collaboration in the advances.
Possibly the resulting benefit for our country will be the support offered by Fapesp (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa no Estado de São Paulo) with the recently launched Researchers at Risk program.
This program aims to help research institutions in São Paulo to receive scientists from the countries involved in the war that is currently unfolding in Ukraine.
The institution’s support will make it possible to receive in São Paulo those interested in carrying out studies or continuing the development of ongoing research.
The amount of funding offered is R$ 20 million, and proposals may include visiting researcher assistance or a postdoctoral fellowship lasting up to 24 months.
