Pacheco defends caution with the end of the health emergency ‘while people are dying’

by

Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) urged caution in decisions regarding the end of the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic “while people are dying” as a result of the disease.

The speech by the president of the Senate and the National Congress comes two days after Minister Marcelo Queiroga (Health) made a speech on radio and television announcing the measure.

“I think it requires a certain caution because while people are dying of that [Covid-19], we have to be very careful. But naturally the Minister of Health is a responsible person, he certainly has the basis for decisions. Let’s wait, let’s evaluate”, said the senator from Minas, when he arrived for the plenary session of the Senate.

Pacheco also stated that the senators will make an assessment of the legislative issue of the end of the health emergency, when the normative act is published. This is because there are several laws passed in the National Congress that make reference to this condition and that, therefore, should expire.

On Sunday night, Queiroga made a speech on radio and television to announce that the government will publish in the coming days a normative act to decree the end of the health emergency caused by Covid-19. The act should be published by the government this Wednesday (20).

Queiroga said that this new situation does not mean “the end of Covid-19”.

“Thanks to the improvement in the epidemiological scenario, the wide vaccination coverage of the population and the capacity of SUS assistance, we are today able to announce the end of the public health emergency of national importance, Espin. this decision”, said the minister, in a statement.

“This measure, however, does not mean the end of Covid-19. We will continue to live with the virus. The Ministry of Health remains vigilant and prepared to adopt all necessary actions to guarantee the health of Brazilians in full respect of the federal constitution” , continued.

The so-called Espin (Public Health Emergency of National Importance) supports the emergency use of vaccines, non-bidding purchases and other rules related to the pandemic.

One of the initial reflexes may be in the offer of certain vaccines against Covid-19. With the end of the health emergency, the use of the Coronavac vaccine against Covid-19 should be restricted to children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years, as announced by Queiroga himself.

The Ministry of Health requested that Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) authorize for another year for this public the emergency use of Coronavac, a vaccine by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac produced in Brazil in partnership with the Butantan Institute, even with the end of the health emergency.

The folder said it did not include the primary regimen in adults in the order. The regulatory agency has yet to approve this request.

State Health Secretaries reacted and stated that the end of the public health emergency could have a strong impact on the number of doctors and nurses in the public network. This is because many were hired on an emergency basis, a condition that was possible thanks to the exceptional situation.
