After causing a public health crisis in the United States that has lasted for years, the increase in the use of opioids has worried doctors in Brazil. Inadequate prescription and the growth in the number of patients dependent on these analgesics generate fears that the country may face a situation similar to the American one.
In 2019, a survey by Fiocruz showed that 4.4 million Brazilians had already made illegal use of an opiate — or 2.9% of the population. These medicines, which come from the poppy, relieve pain, cause a feeling of euphoria and are very addictive.
According to data from Anvisa, while in 2020 21.7 million packages of these narcotics were sold, in the first six months of 2021 alone, there were 14.4 million. If the second half has reflected the first, the year will have closed with an increase of around 33% compared to the previous one.
At this Friday’s Breakfast (29), the reporter from Sheet Claudia Colucci, who is a health specialist, talks about the risk of the opioid crisis reaching Brazil and tells how doctors have seen the legal and illegal uses of this substance.
