In 4 months, Brazil ties with dengue cases for the entire year of 2021

In just four months, Brazil has recorded almost the same number of dengue cases as last year.

There were 542,000 probable infections between January and April this year, according to the latest Epidemiological Bulletin of the Ministry of Health. In the twelve months of 2021, 544 thousand were registered.

Only in the comparison between the first four months of 2022 with that of 2021, the increase is 113.7%.

The number of deaths is also close to that recorded for the whole of last year. So far, there have been 160 confirmed cases, 56 of which are in São Paulo, which has the highest incidence. There are still 228 deaths under investigation.

In the last epidemiological bulletin on dengue cases in 2021, the Ministry of Health had reported 240 deaths from the disease and another 62 cases under investigation.

Dengue is an acute febrile disease of viral etiology and benign evolution in most cases. It usually occurs in tropical and subtropical areas, where environmental conditions favor the development of the mosquito. The disease incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants has reached a peak this year in the Midwest. While in Brazil as a whole it is at 254 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, in the region this number rises to 920.

Two capitals in the region even lead the ranking of cities with the highest number of cases. concentrating 11% of all cases in Brazil. Goiânia (GO) has already registered 31,200 cases, while Brasília has already reported 29,900 infections.

The South is also above the national average, with 427.2 cases per 100,000. In the Southeast, it is 188.3 cases per 100 thousand. The North, with 154 cases per 100,000, and the Northeast, with 105 cases per 100,000, have the lowest incidences.
