Portuguese authorities have begun offering a fourth dose of Covid-19 vaccine to the elderly and nursing home residents, the country’s General Directorate of Health (DGS) announced today.
The second booster dose was originally scheduled for early fall this year, but it was decided to start earlier due to the rising number of new infections in the country.
According to DGS, those over the age of 80 will be offered the vaccine this week at vaccination centers or health centers.
The DGS Vaccination Technical Committee against Covid-19 (CTVC) recommended this second booster dose to improve “the protection of the most vulnerable members of the population, given the current increase in the number of new cases”.
DGS estimates that approximately 750,000 people are expected to be vaccinated within the next four months, including those recovering from Covid-19 during this period.
Then, the second booster dose will be offered to children and young people between the ages of 12 and 15 and to people with immunosuppressed diseases.
