Research: Increased risk of fatal prostate cancer for obese and smokers

by

Smokers are less likely to develop it prostate cancer (for some unknown reason), but they are at greater risk of dying from it if they get sick, especially if they are obese, according to a new large Swedish scientific study.

Researchers at Lund Universitywith headed by Dr. Sylvia Johemswho made the relevant post in European urology magazine, analyzed data for 351,448 men over a decade. During the study, 24,731 men developed prostate cancer and 4,322 died from the disease.

It was found that the risk of death was about 20% higher in smokers than in non-smokers. The risk was even higher for smokers who were overweight (body mass index 25-30) or obese (index over 30).

On the other hand, while it is known that smokers have a higher risk of various cancers, it has been found that smokers are generally less likely to have a positive PSA test and a diagnosis of prostate cancer. This is especially true for lower-risk local (non-metastatic) prostate cancer, the most common form of which is detected by a PSA test without any other symptoms.

Johams stated that “Smokers have a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer regardless of the stage of the cancer being diagnosed, so it affects all forms of the disease, from low-risk to metastatic cancers.».

Associate Professor Tania Stock pointed out that “eAn important question to answer is whether a patient’s prognosis can improve if he stops smoking after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.».
