THE United Kingdom Minister of Health Sajid Javid announced via Twitter that the UK Health Insurance Service has now detected 20 cases smallpox of monkeys.
That is what it is about 11 more cases compared to the previous update two days ago.
The minister also said that he had informed his counterparts from the G7 countries about what the British health authorities knew.
According to him, “most cases are mild”, while at the same time he confirmed that the Ministry of Health has ordered more doses of the vaccine against the disease.
The British government is believed to have ordered another 20,000 doses of smallpox vaccine, which is effective against monkeypox, in addition to the 5,000 available.
Patients, other than the first to travel to Nigeria where the disease is endemic, It is believed that they were infected on British soil, in a development that has been described as “unusual”.
The government is reportedly considering a campaign to inform mainly gay men about the risk of contracting the disease, as most of the confirmed cases concern homosexual or bisexual men.
Most cases are also found in London. The director of public health of the capital, Professor Kevin Fenton, called on the citizens to seek medical help if they see rashes around the mouth and in the genital area.
