(News Bulletin 247) – Ford announced on Tuesday that it plans to cut 3,800 jobs in Europe as the US automaker seeks to ease its cost base in anticipation of the coming economic slowdown.

In a press release published in the morning, the group justifies its decision by its desire to restructure its European activities in order to put in place a more competitive cost structure.

It is its engineers who will be the most affected, since Ford says it wants to cut 2,800 jobs in the engineering professions by 2025, or nearly half of the 6,200 jobs currently in the division.

Functions devoted to administrative tasks, marketing, sales and distribution will also be affected with the loss of around 1,000 positions.

In geographical terms, Germany will be the most impacted (with 2,300 job cuts) followed by the United Kingdom (1,300) and the rest of Europe (200).

By way of comparison, Ford says it currently employs 34,000 people in Europe through its direct activities and more than 54,000 taking into account its unconsolidated subsidiaries.

The American manufacturer assures that its objective of offering an all-electric range in 2035 remains unchanged, with its first electric passenger vehicle produced in Europe still expected to leave its factories by the end of the year.

Ford announced yesterday evening that it had chosen to set up its site in Michigan dedicated to the manufacture of lithium batteries (LFP), a project that should create some 2,500 jobs.
