(News Bulletin 247) – Barry Callebaut and Nestlé are joining forces in a large-scale agroforestry project in Côte d’Ivoire.

The agreement will make it possible to deploy 11,500 hectares of agroforestry to more than 6,000 farmers in Côte d’Ivoire. “This is an important step in our shared climate journey, supporting our efforts to further expand agroforestry in cocoa growing communities,” the group says.

This joint partnership supports Nestlé and Barry Callebaut’s climate-smart cocoa ambitions, aiming to eliminate up to 1.3 million tonnes of CO2 over 25 years.

‘As part of Nestlé’s Net Zero roadmap, we are committed to reducing the climate impact of our business right down to the farms we source from. A trusted partner like Barry Callebaut is essential to success. More than 21,000 football pitches are covered by our joint agroforestry project to support farmers who are part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan,” said Darrell High, Cocoa Manager at Nestlé.

‘The collaboration allows us to support the planting of trees on cocoa farms, while restoring ecosystems, removing carbon from the atmosphere, diversifying farmers’ incomes and ultimately increasing resilience farmers’ climate change,” said Tilmann Silber, global forest and carbon program manager at Barry Callebaut.
