(News Bulletin 247) – Continental announces that it has extended its ‘CoSmA’ digital access system with a child presence detection function (CPD – child presence detection) within vehicles.

The company recalls that when outside temperatures reach 30 degrees, temperatures inside the car can reach 45 degrees in half an hour, which can put the lives of young children at risk, according to research from the company. of Georgia.

In fact, nearly 40 children in the United States die each year from heatstroke in the car, according to the National Safety Council.

“We were the first to market with ultra-wideband for in-vehicle digital access. We are now using this technology to save lives by detecting abandoned children in a vehicle,” says Jean-François Tarabbia, Business Area Manager Architecture and Networking at Continental.

Detecting breathing and body micro-movements, the system can classify passengers as infants, children or adults. If children are left in the car, the system can then send an audible, visual or vibration alert to the driver’s phone to warn them.

The CPD will enable automakers to meet future Euro NCAP and US regulatory safety targets for 2025.
