(News Bulletin 247) – IBM announced on Thursday the signing of an agreement with Moderna aimed at combining quantum computing and artificial intelligence in order to advance scientific research in messenger RNA.
The American group explains that the partnership should enable Moderna researchers to use generative artificial intelligence to better understand the behavior of certain molecules and to create new ones.
Under the terms of the collaboration, Moderna will join the IBM Quantum Network, IBM’s program to advance quantum computing and explore its real-world applications.
As part of the agreement, IBM will provide Moderna with access to its quantum systems, as well as the expertise to help it explore cutting-edge life science use cases, relying on quantum technologies.
Their teams are also expected to rely on MoLFormer, an artificial intelligence model that can predict the properties of a molecule and understand the characteristics of potential mRNA-based drugs.
The goal for Moderna will be to use MoLFormer to optimize the lipid nanoparticles that encapsulate and protect mRNA as it moves through the body, but also the mRNA itself, so that it serves as a motor instructing cells to fight disease.
