(News Bulletin 247) – Siemens Energy announced yesterday that the consortium it formed with the Spanish Dragados Offshore had signed a framework agreement with TenneT (the German-Dutch electricity transmission system operator) to supply it with high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology for three grid connections in the German North Sea.

This agreement will ensure that a total of 6 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy can be transported onshore. The value of the contract is close to 7 billion euros, reports Siemens Energy.

Specifically, the three grid connections, named BalWin3, LanWin2 and LanWin4, will transport electricity from the German North Sea wind farms to grid connection points in northern Germany. Each of the systems has a transmission capacity of two gigawatts.

Under the contract, Siemens Energy will manufacture key electrical components, such as switchgears, transformers and converter technologies, at its factories in Europe. For its part, Dragados Offshore will be responsible for the offshore construction and installation of the platforms.
