(News Bulletin 247) – Nestlé announced on Wednesday that it has inaugurated a new research institute in Lausanne aimed at supporting sustainable food systems.

Within this site, Nestlé experts will be responsible for researching and developing solutions in key areas such as plant science, farming systems and dairy production.

“With global food systems under pressure, there is an urgent need to accelerate the development of new approaches that guarantee a sustainable food supply for a growing world population while contributing to the livelihoods of farmers,” explains the Swiss agribusiness giant. food in a press release.

Nestlé – which says it wants to build on its knowledge of coffee and cocoa – says it wants to extend its expertise to other crops, including legumes and cereals.

The institute should work with farmers to test regenerative practices to improve soil health and encourage biodiversity.

Its researchers will also work on new approaches to dairy production with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both in cow feeding and manure management.

In addition to its new facilities in Lausanne, the institute includes a plant science research unit in France, farms based in Ecuador, Côte d’Ivoire and Thailand, as well as partnerships with farms.
