(News Bulletin 247) – GE announced today that it has been selected – in consortium with Cobra Infrastructuras Hidráulicas – by Red Eléctrica, to deliver six pumped storage turbines for the 200 MW Chira Soria project in Gran Canaria, in Spain.

The works include the design, supply, transport and commissioning of turbines, generators, main transformers and electrical balancing equipment. The project is expected to be commissioned in 2027, with an energy storage capacity of 3.5 GWh.

When completed, the power plant will increase renewable energy production on the island by 37%. This will result in an additional 20% reduction in annual CO2 emissions.

This system is expected to save variable generation costs amounting to €122 million per year by reducing reliance on more expensive energy imports.

Juan Bola Merino, Chief Operating Officer of Non-Peninsular Territories System, Red Eléctrica, said: ‘This project enhances security and guarantees the supply of electricity by increasing network capacity, which is essential for an isolated network. . ‘

“The use of seawater also demonstrates that with ingenuity, hydropower can reach new heights,” adds Pascal Radue, Managing Director of GE Hydro Solutions.
