“We managed to find a compromise that regulates AI in a proportionate way, protects civil rights and stimulates innovation and the economy,” German MEP Svenja Hahn told Reuters.

In Thursday morning’s vote, MPs gave the green light to a ban on the use of facial recognition in public spaces and predictive policing tools, and agreed to impose new transparency measures on generative AI applications like ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI.

The draft legislation will be put to a plenary vote in the European Parliament in June, before final terms are agreed in negotiations involving representatives of the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission. .
