(News Bulletin 247) – For the first time, the production of chassis and drive components in the 02-10 factory of the BMW Group site in Dingolfing uses an electrically heated annular hearth furnace, the group announces today.

Compared to its conventional gas-fired equivalent, the latest electric oven currently saves some 300 tonnes of CO2 per year.

“The new oven has an expected lifespan of over 40 years, so it is future-oriented equipment that sets the stage on our journey to zero emissions,” said Marc Sielemann, Head of Quality and director of the 02.10 component factory in Dingolfing.

The BMW Group has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality across the entire value chain by 2050 at the latest.

The hardening furnace, equipped with the innovative ‘power-to-heat’ technology, required an investment of approximately 7 million euros.

This new furnace not only reduces gas consumption at the Dingolfing plant, but also promotes the integration of renewable energies into the electricity grid. “In the future, we plan to convert the other ovens to electricity,” added Marc Sielemann.
