(News Bulletin 247) – As part of its commitment to identify, quantify and reduce methane emissions related to its activities, TotalEnergies announces that it has joined forces with the University of Colorado to develop an international protocol for the qualification of methane emissions.

This transatlantic initiative makes it possible to overcome the fact that there is currently no common standard for validating the methods for measuring methane emissions, which is essential for comparing the announced emissions regardless of the technology.

TotalEnergies and the University of Colorado will collaborate to develop a protocol to certify the accuracy, detection limits and operational restrictions of measurements used for methane accounting and to develop a method to estimate annual methane measurements from spot measurements.

‘Reducing methane emissions requires precise quantification of these emissions. It is therefore essential to define a standard to certify the accuracy of measurements and to compare measurements between equipment and continents,’ said Marie-Noëlle Semeria, R&D director of TotalEnergies.
