(News Bulletin 247) – ABB yesterday presented ABB Dynafin, a new ‘revolutionary’ propulsion concept for the maritime industry.
Inspired by the dynamic movements of a whale’s tail, the innovative concept is the result of more than a decade of R&D and testing and its first prototype is expected by 2025.
Concretely, this new concept of propulsion includes a main electric motor that powers a large wheel rotating at a moderate rate of 30 to 80 revolutions per minute.
Vertical blades, each controlled by an individual motor and control system, extend from the wheel.
The combined movement of the impeller and blades simultaneously generates propulsion and steering forces.
The concept follows ABB’s proven design philosophy for gearless power transmission marine propulsion.
Initially available in the power range of 1 to 4 MW per unit, the new propulsion concept is particularly effective for medium and smaller vessels, including passenger and vehicle ferries, offshore support vessels operating in wind farms and yachts.
