(News Bulletin 247) – The former managing director of Diageo, Ivan Menezes, died at the age of 63 from the consequences of a “brief illness”, the British spirits giant announced on Wednesday.

Arrived within the group in 1997, during the merger between Guinness and Grand Metropolitan, Ivan Menezes had held many positions of responsibility within the group before rising to the position of general manager in 2013.

Diageo announced Monday that he had to be hospitalized for health problems linked to a stomach ulcer, followed by complications after surgery.

During his tenure, Diageo experienced a period of exceptional growth, which resulted in a 76% surge in its stock price, compared with a 15% gain for the FTSE 100 index in the meantime. .

Born in Pune, India, in 1959, Ivan Menezes held British and American citizenship.

As marketing director, he notably distinguished himself, from 1998, thanks to the success of the ‘Keep Walking’ campaign led by the whiskey brand Johnnie Walker.

With more than 200 brands marketed in 180 countries, Diageo is now the world number one, in terms of volumes, in the markets of scotch, vodka, gin, rum and liqueurs.

Ivan Menezes announced last March that he had decided to step down as CEO on June 30.

In order to replace him, Diageo had appointed Debra Crew, its operational director, thus favoring an internal choice within the framework of his succession.
